Having coached and developed national and international medalists, Darshan's journey is a testament to his indomitable spirit and visionary approach to coaching.

The Genesis: From Injury to Inspiration

In 2014, after a back slip disc injury and a broken right knee patella abruptly ended his professional playing career, Darshan turned adversity into an opportunity. Determined to stay connected to the sport he loved, he founded the Vernekar Badminton Academy in Bangalore. His academy became a beacon for aspiring players, producing numerous national-level athletes.

Darshan’s talent for coaching caught the attention of Xtra Sports in Dubai, UAE, where he was invited to join as the Chief Head Coach and General Manager. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in his coaching career.

Shaping Champions in Dubai

As the Chief Head Coach at Xtra Sports Badminton Academy, Darshan played a pivotal role in transforming raw talent into elite athletes. Under his leadership, players excelled in UAE national tournaments and junior international circuits, achieving top-10 positions in the BWF World Junior Rankings.

Some of his standout protégés include:

  • Dev Vishnu: Ranked No. 15 in the Junior World Rankings.

  • Madhumitha Sundharpandian: Ranked No. 100 in women’s singles.

  • Nayonika Rajesh: Ranked No. 109 in women’s singles.

Darshan’s athletes made history at the 2020 ISF World School Games, bringing home two gold and two silver medals. The following year in France, his players continued to shine, securing a silver medal. His students also competed at the Asia Badminton Championship and other prestigious junior international tournaments.

Roots of Excellence

Darshan's coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in his own experiences as a player. His journey began in 1999 when he was selected to train under legendary mentors like Prakash Padukone and U Vimal Kumar. For over a decade, Darshan honed his skills at their prestigious academy alongside future Olympians like Saina Nehwal and Lakshya Sen. His career as a player was marked by victories in state, national, and All-India tournaments until 2012.

A New Chapter in New Zealand

In January 2023, Darshan embarked on a new journey, joining New Zealand’s renowned School of Badminton, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing emerging talent. Working with promising players like Jenny Zhu and Jay Xuan Tan, Darshan once again proved his mettle. Jenny Zhu flourished under his guidance, and Jay Xuan Tan represented New Zealand at the 2024 World Junior Championships in China.

Darshan also nurtured numerous national-level players in New Zealand, further solidifying his reputation as a transformative coach. His contributions earned him the Club Coach of the Year Award in December 2023, recognizing his outstanding achievements within a Badminton Canterbury-affiliated club.
